A powerhouse for industry

Situated in southeastern Wisconsin along the western shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee enjoys broad and easy access to water transportation, along with a reliable network of highways and railways, making it a vital transportation hub for goods and services.

The region’s proximity to major markets like Chicago and Minneapolis allows for easy connectivity across the Midwest. With its inviting climate and diverse landscapes, including beautiful parks, beaches, and dedicated green spaces, our region offers a high standard of living that attracts talent and keeps businesses here for the long term.

Fresh water + abundant land

The Milwaukee region sits along the western shore of Lake Michigan, 90 minutes from Chicago, five hours from Minneapolis, with direct freight rail, a major interstate hub, and the Port of Milwaukee that provides international shipping access.

The region spans both the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds, a geographic distinction shared by almost no other U.S. metro. Combined with access to 20% of the world's surface fresh water via the Great Lakes, this gives water-intensive industries a structural advantage that simply does not exist elsewhere.

Robust infrastructure powers growth

Across the Milwaukee 7 region, companies benefit from multimodal connectivity that helps people and products move efficiently, including major interstate access, direct freight rail links, and global shipping through the Port of Milwaukee and the Great Lakes.  In Milwaukee, local mobility is strengthened by bus service and the streetcar network, while Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport and access to Chicago O’Hare extend the region’s reach for business travel and air connections.  Together, this infrastructure supports reliable operations and long-term investment across all seven counties in the Milwaukee 7 footprint.
