The Village of Mount Pleasant, Racine County, Racine County Economic Development Corporation (RCEDC), and Milwaukee 7 (M7) announced today plans for Microsoft to significantly expand its investment in Mount Pleasant.
If approved by Village and County, the company would invest billions of dollars to construct new datacenters to meet the evolving computational needs of its global customer base, expanding on Microsoft's $1 billion investment announced earlier this year, which is already among the largest single private sector investments in Wisconsin history.
“Microsoft’s commitment to the M7 region is further evidence of our area’s growing status as a technology hub,” said Gale Klappa, co-chair of M7 and executive chairman of WEC Energy Group. “And this remarkable project being planned by Microsoft clearly validates the public and private investment that was made to prepare the Mount Pleasant site for a generational opportunity.”
Microsoft is among a large and growing roster of technology companies helping Wisconsin to firmly plant its flag in the digital economy of the 21st Century.
“It is with great excitement that RCEDC and our regional and state partners share details
about Microsoft’s proposed expansion in the Village of Mount Pleasant and Racine County,” said Jenny Trick, Executive Director of RCEDC. “It is our mission to facilitate development that will enhance and enrich our community – the opportunity to do so at the scale Microsoft proposes is uniquely thrilling.”
Microsoft would acquire an additional 1,030 acres within Mount Pleasant Tax Incremental District (TID) No. 5. Planning for the Mount Pleasant datacenters has already begun, and the company anticipates investing billion of dollars over the next decade in buildings, support structures, systems and equipment.
“Today’s announcement is further evidence of Microsoft’s long-term commitment to Racine
County,” said Bo Wallace, Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Data Centers, Americas Region. “We are focused on bringing benefits to the community through our investments in our datacenters and through partnerships with local organizations. I would like to thank the leadership and staff of Racine County and the Village of Mount Pleasant for their support of our development. We look forward to continuing our collaboration as we expand our presence in southeast Wisconsin.”
The State of Wisconsin has been a strong partner with the Village and County to create one of the most robust megaproject sites in the United States. Governor Tony Evers and other state leaders were key collaborators in supporting Microsoft's expansion plans.
